Jamaica World Wind

Jamaica is blessed with over five hundred kilometers of coastline, most of which absorb the eastern trade winds as the pass by. Our studies, as well as those carried out by the University of the West Indies and others over the years, have proven that there is a significant potential for generating electricity by wind. There is ample wind above the coastal waters, especially at the extreme ends of the island, to meet a significant quantity of Jamaicans' power needs.

  • Most of our towns and villages are near the coastline thus poised for the benefits of this free natural form of energy.
  • Most of our tourism attractions are on the north and western coast lands thus are in a prime position to benefit too.
  • Most of our main cities main cities like Kingston, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios with thousands of power users also stand to benefit.

Alternex’s Jamaica World Wind Mini wind turbines and Mini wind farms are an excellent way to give home-owners the opportunity to take advantage of this great natural resource.

Units come in 600 W,1,000 W,1,500 W and 2.000 W. The units can be combined to produce the power required.

Configurations

We have two main types of configuration for our mini wind farms there are the “NEST” and the "TREE" configuration. Application is based on practicality and taste and both can be used  in clusters for larger farms. They can operate up to 20 kilowatts. Clusters could be coupled in hundreds of thousands making it possible to give several megawatts of power. Our wind systems include highly cost effective stand alone, grid interactive systems and mini wind farms, which are ideal for urban wind systems. Mini wind farms are probably the most cost efficient power generating system (if there is wind of course) as they have the following advantages.

Advantages

  • They do not need the sophisticated order and delivery requirements as single systems of equivalent power.
  • They can be easily assembled and installed on a roof especially slab roof or on suitable property very near the user, as they consist of several small units not at towering much over the natural vegetation they are fairly inconspicuous.
  • They are easily coupled or disaggregated depending on user preference electrically
  • Individual units may be physically moved around to match surroundings
  • Individual units may be taken out of service for maintenance leaving the others to operate independently
  • As units are fairly standardized in power and voltage generic and branded units may be interchanged
  • Due how close small units can be installed to the load, much less and smaller size wires are needed
  • As individual clusters of units are small, heavy equipment is usually not needed for service
  • As units are small they can be easily removed in case of very powerful hurricanes and they are easily reinstalled thereafter

Disadvantage

  • Becasue they are small there is a higher possibility of loss due to theft.
